Review of Love in the Friend Zone by Molly E. Lee

  • Title: Love in the Friend Zone
  • Author: Molly E. Lee
  • Publisher: Entangled Publishing LLC (Crush)
  • Publication Date: August 14, 2017
  • Pages: 188
  • Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Goodreads Synopsis:

The only thing worse than not being able to tell your best friend you’re head over heels in love with him? Having to smile and nod when he enlists your help to ensnare the girl of his dreams.

Braylen didn’t even want to go to Lennon Pryor’s epic graduation-night party, but when Fynn begs her to be his “wingwoman,” she can’t deny him. Talking up her BFF—how he’s magic behind a camera, with a killer sense of humor and eyelashes that frame the most gorgeous blue eyes in the history of forever—is easy. Supporting his efforts to woo someone so completely wrong for him? Not so much.

Fynn knows that grad night is his last shot before leaving for college to find true love. And thanks to Bray, he gets his chance with the beautiful Katy Evans. But over the course of the coolest party of their high school careers, he starts to see that perhaps what he really wants has been in front of him all along. Bray’s been his best friend since kindergarten, though, and he’d rather have her in his life as a friend than not at all.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains one epic party, complete with every high-schoolers-gone-bad shenanigan, and two best friends whose sexual chemistry is off the charts…if only they’d succumb to it.

ARC of Love in the Friends Zone was provided through NetGalley for an honest Review!

I could not put Love in the Friend Zone down! This was such an entertaining read that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. In a lot of ways it reminded me of the 1998 movie “Can’t Hardly Wait”, but with a twist.

Braylen is my kind of chick! She’s nerdy and loves all things star wars, zombies, and super heroes. But she’s not some shy girl either, she’s quick witted and obviously comfortable with just being herself. Honestly, I loved and related to her character so much, even when she was being stubborn as hell.

Fynn was pretty cool to even though he was completely oblivious. I mean even a blind man could see the chemistry between him and Braylen. Other than that issue Flynn was totally swoon worthy, even though some would describe him as kind of a nerd as well. But hey who says nerds can’t be hot? So what if he liked photography, and making Yoda shaped pancakes. He also really looked out for Braylen, and went above and beyond to be the one person she could always rely on.

A big shot out needs to be made for the party that takes place in this book along with those that attended it. It truly sounded like an epic night full of drinking, music, last shots at love, guys jumping from balconies, a dream pool, and a huge friendly dog. One can only hope to experience a party as epic as this one at least once in their lifetime.

I think there also needs to be something said for the awesome friends in this book! They really try their best give both Braylen and Fynn advice through out this whole thing, even friends they just met that night. Plus there’s Bray’s friend Zoey, who words can not describe. In fact, there’s a little blurb at the end that announces a book just for Zoey’s night at this epic party. I know I for one will be grabbing a copy of that as soon as it is available.

So if there is one thing you should take away from this review is that Love in the Friend Zone is an awesome book and a must read! You will really be missing out if you don’t check it out.

  • Title: Diary of a Teenage Jewel Thief
  • Author: Rosie Somers
  • Publisher: Entangled Teen
  • Publication Date: August 7, 2017
  • Pages: 206
  • Genre: Young Adult Romance

Goodreads Synopsis:

Most sixteen-year-olds shouldn’t know where museums keep their rarest jewels (the basement) and they really shouldn’t know that vans make the worst getaway cars. But for Marisol Flores, a life of jewel thievery is a birthright handed down from generation to generation, even if she didn’t ask for it. So when a rival thief targets Mari and her mother, Mari’s more than happy to flee to the anonymity of bustling New York City.

Blending in is a dream come true for Mari, but keeping her former thieving ways a secret gets way more complicated when handsome Will Campbell sets his sights on her. She can’t help but like his terrible puns and charming grin…but when her past catches up with her, it’s not only her life—and her anonymity—that’s at stake.

Will could be the next target.

Goodreads * Amazon

ARC for Diary of a Teenage Jewel Thief was provided through NetGalley for an honest review.

Diary of a Teenage Jewel Thief had excited me right away with the synopsis and beautiful cover, and even though it wasn’t what I expected it was still a really great read.

Mari’s character was something special and not just because she was a thief. For some reason I expected her to be extremely confident given the fact that she’s a skilled thief and has traveled all over. In actuality, she was confident when it came to her thieving skills but when it came to social situations, she was completely clueless. I felt like the two sides to her were so drastically different that it helped make her a really deep and interesting character. Through it all, no matter how scared or worried she was, she stayed tough and sassy. Even when Will, who literally made her want to melt, was flirting and getting so close she could hardly think.

One of the small highlights for me was Mari’s relationship with her Mom. Yes, they were thieves, but they were also mother and daughter. I loved how they never lost sight of that also put each other before anything else. Family was what really mattered to them, and it showed.

The only thing I wished it had more of was the actual stealing, but I understood that it really wasn’t needed for where the storyline was going. Still, it would have been an extra layer of fun. Also, considering she comes from a long line of jewel thieves, it would have been cool to get a closer look at her interesting family.

Diary of a Teenage Jewel Thief will have you hooked from the very first page, I know it did me. With page after page of romance, action, and adventure, I can promise you it’s worth the read.

EXCERPT:

My eyes widened, my heart hammering against my rib cage. A fear I didn’t understand tugged at my tailfin, like an anchor had been tied to its end. I sank against the wall of our pirated vessel and watched the chaos as it unfolded in slow motion.

Gene laughed at something my sister said just before it hit him. His smile fell in an instant as soon as the sudden deadening feeling pummeled into his chest. He dropped the plate and held out his hand. From my experience with Beaked Sea Snake, he was seeing double the fingers.

A fogginess washed over his eyes. He reached out for Fawna for just a second before his arms fell to his sides, limp and useless. Then, his human legs gave out from under him. A loud crack sounded as his knees made impact with the hard floor of the ship.

When he finally fell backward, my sister stood over his paralyzed body with a shameless, cruel smirk that gave me the chills. My mother, hovering well above me, nodded her approval with a warm, glowing pride showing on her face.

I looked around, expecting to see the same shocked expression I wore among my clan. But not one jaw was dropped. Every one of them watched with tense, excited eyes. They looked like bloodthirsty demons from where I was sitting.

“Mother,” I whispered. “What’s going on?”

She didn’t hear me.

“My Queen,” someone shouted from below. “What are your orders?”

Mother took in a long, powerful breath and shouted, “Air him out.”

I gasped, disbelief shuddering through me. “Mother,” I screamed. “Mother, you can’t!”

My protests were drowned out by the unified battle cry that erupted from every member of our clan. Angelique dropped her guitar, dashing for Gene with two other mermaids close behind.

I rushed for him, but Mother grabbed my arm with bruising fingers.

“Let me go,” I demanded.

Even through the screeching cheers below, I could hear Mother’s teeth grinding. “Don’t make a scene.”

I stilled, having every intention to stay put and comply, as usual. But then, I caught a glimpse of Gene’s face. While his muscles were tight and immobile, his eyes were filled with a conscious terror. They pleaded with me from across the ship, begging me to save him.

Before I could stop myself, I twisted my arm out of Mother’s grasp and swam to him, hoping to talk some sense into my sister before she did something terrible.

It was no use. I couldn’t reach them. They had too much of a head start. All I could do was watch as they snatched the helpless human and dragged his lifeless body up, up, and up until…

Bubbles sprayed all around them as they held Gene’s head and neck above water, but kept their own gills safely submerged. Even if he had working legs to thrash and fight with, he would be outmatched. Our tails treaded water in a way a human’s boney appendages couldn’t come close to.

He was in our world, by no choice of his own. We brought him down here against his will, and now that he was a part of it, my mother was sending him back home to die.

The gills would not disappear. They would only struggle for a short while before giving up to the heat of the land above. Gene’s chest moved in and out, in faster but shallower spurts.

I kicked my tail harder. Just as he came into my reach, he took one final gulp of air from his own world, and the movement stopped.

Mother had killed him.

Can Loren face the trauma of her past and vanquish the demons within, or will betrayal and obsession ultimately defeat her?

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Loren rose from her chair and began to gather up the cups and plates they had used as Graham watched her through half-closed eyes. She leaned into the table with a grin.

“Are ya gettin’ sleepy?”

He put his hands on her hips to pull her close. “No, are you?”

She licked her lips. “I have to admit, I was enjoying what we were doing before we were interrupted.” Loren raised a brow at him. Graham’s mouth twitched, and he took out his mobile to shuffle through his music. As the first notes of the song began, he stood and extended his hand to her.

“Dance with me?” He drew Loren to him, his eyes never leaving hers as they moved in rhythm with the music. “Hereafter, in a better world than this,” he murmured, “I shall desire more love and knowledge of you.”

Their breath mixed as his lips hovered over hers. He kissed her gently at first, then with increased fervor as his hands glided over the curves of her body. Her positive response urged him into further exploration. It was several minutes before he realized he had laid her back on the table with one of her legs curled over his hip. Graham reluctantly ended their kiss.

“I’m sorry. I-I got a little carried away there,” he said, his breathing unsteady.

Loren kissed him. “We both got a little carried away.”

He helped her return to her feet but couldn’t bring himself to let go. He brushed the back of his fingers against her cheek and kissed her again. Her touch, her smell, the way she felt in his arms; he’d never been so completely at ease with anyone. He pressed his forehead lightly into hers.

“Who are you?”

She backed out of his embrace and offered him her hand. “Loren Mackenzie, pro cyclist. Nice to meet you.”

Graham laughed and shook her hand. “I am so glad I turned around!”

Her chuckle dissolved as she tucked her lower lip in her teeth. “I’d better get you back to your car before we do something we might regret.”

He took a deep breath and licked his lips. “You’re right.” He squinted at her. “How would you, you said you don’t have a car?”

“I have a motorcycle.”

“Oh, I don’t think so, darling.” He released her from his arms.

“Come on.” Loren motioned for him to follow and headed to a shed hidden behind the willow tree. When she opened the doors, the glossy black BMW F800R sport bike glowed in the overhead florescent light.

He scoffed as he placed his hand on the headlamp. “The two of us won’t fit on that.”

“Not that one. This one.” She took the canvas off the matte black Harley-Davidson Night Rod motorcycle. “Anthony’s Harley is bigger than mine.”

Graham’s mouth dropped open. “Wow. That’s…that’s a Harley?” He frowned. “But still…”

She tossed a helmet at him. “Come on. Help me get it out of the stand.” She grabbed the handlebars, and they both gave the bike a push to roll it out of the shed and Loren set the kickstand. “Anthony keeps it in good shape, but it still needs to be ridden every so often,” she said, putting on her helmet. “He converted his garage into a gym, that’s why it’s here.”

“Ah,” he said, holding open the larger gate next to the shed for her as she pushed the Harley down the gravel path to the street. Graham followed her only to stop short at the sight of her on the machine.

“Come on. I’m a professional,” she chuckled and patted the seat behind her. He was grumbling as he donned the helmet, then mounted the seat behind her. His knees were under her arms with his feet on the pegs, and she giggled as she leaned back against him like an easy chair.

“Yes, yes, it’s hilarious,” he muttered, making her laugh harder.

Loren pushed the ignition and the engine rumbled to life beneath them. After knocking the stand with her heel, she eased out the clutch while rolling the throttle to move off down the street. Graham had been holding her waist loosely at first, but as the Harley took off, the burst of speed had him tighten his arms. He could feel her laughing in his embrace.

Loren came to a brief stop at London Road then took a left turn to rumble down the street. Another left turn and they were soon at the car park where she came to a stop next to his car and set the stand again. She was grinning as she took off her helmet as Graham awkwardly dismounted.

“Fun, huh?”

“I reckon I would have preferred to walk,” he complained as he handed her the helmet where she hooked it to the buckle behind her then swung her leg over the bike. She was smiling as she approached.

“Oh, that’s a pity,” she said, sliding her hands around his waist. “I rather liked having your arms around me.”

“You have but to ask, my Lady.” He gathered her in his arms to nuzzle her neck. “I must admit, I would have been quite put out if I had to wait another week to see you.”

“Me, too.”

“Good night, good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night ‘til it be morrow.” His voice was a low rumble as he leaned in to kiss her, but stopped. “Well, not actually tomorrow, as you’ll be off to Colchester.”

“Oh, do shut up and kiss me,” Loren laughed.

“Gladly,” Graham murmured and staked his claim to her lips.

August placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. The heat of his palm burned into my bare skin. I shivered.

That reassuring touch turned into a caress, trailing along my collarbone. I swallowed hard. His gaze was fixated, as if mesmerized, as callused fingertips ran a trail up my throat, along my jaw. He cupped the back of my head, sifting through the dark strands.

August leaned forward. My heart jumped in my chest. Soft lips brushed my ear.

“What are you feeling right now?”

His voice was low and husky, inflaming every inch of me.

“I don’t know,” I stammered.

The hitch of my breath, the trembling of my fingers, the flush of my cheeks, told a different story.

I felt his lips curve into a teasing smile.

“Liar.”
